Project Requirement One:
Rugged WORKOUT EQUIPMENT
It had to be rugged, from the same materials used in aerospace operations. Whereas, most fitness equipment is made from cheap materials e.g. coated steel or plastic, we had to find a new approach. The materials had to be developed and sourced from scratch. Standard metals would corrode easily, but our material had to be ready for engagement in marine environments such as yachts and beachside properties. Commonly available elastomers and their associated manufacuring processes did not offer anything remotely close to the tensile and tear strenght required for this application. Especially, not when considering our second project requirement:

Free from toxic materials
We were suprised to find out that despite the fact that training in a tox-free environment is widely perceived not as a luxury but fundamental requirement for long-term health and peak performance, this sadly isn’t a standard at all in the fitness industry. Quite the contrary. Most training tools today are manufactured with materials which are releasing harmful chemicals, which can be absorbed through skin contact or inhalation during exercise.
*) Plastics used in gym mats, weights, grips, and resistance bands may release chemicals and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) over time, affecting air quality and health. Some common off-gassing and chemicals emitting plastics include:
- PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) – Found in yoga mats, resistance bands, and flooring; can release phthalates and chlorine-based VOCs.
- EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) – Used in foam mats and padding; may off-gas acetaldehyde and other VOCs.
- PU (Polyurethane) – Present in coatings, foams, and grips; some formulations may contain isocyanates that off-gas.
- ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) – Used in machine casings and handles; can emit styrene-based VOCs.
- Neoprene – Found in weightlifting gloves and resistance bands; may release chloroprene compounds.
